Becoming a parent is the precious moment which everyone wants to experience. But unfortunately, infertility issues in some couples prevent them from enjoying this moment. Unable to become a parent can be a stressful situation, but the good news is that there are various treatments that are available, which increases the chances of pregnancy.

As per research, around 15% of couples face infertility issues. This implies that they are unable to conceive even after doing unprotected sex for years. In one-third of such cases, males are responsible for infertility. Male infertility is because of low sperm count, abnormality in sperm functionality or blockages which prohibit sperm delivery.

Symptoms of male infertility

The main symptom of infertility is the inability to conceive. Yes, there is no other obvious reason. However, there are some signs and symptoms other than this.

  • For instance, difficulty in ejaculation, ejection of fluid, and less sexual desire.
  • You may notice lump or swelling in the testicle area.
  • Hormonal inability
  • Fewer sperm count

Diagnosis for male infertility

History with a physical examination

Your doctor will ask about your health and medical history. He may try to find out the reason which has resulted in infertility. He may question you about your childhood illness, or any recent health problem or the medication which can result in low sperm count. Your caretaker may also ask a question about the intake of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. He or she will try to find out the reaction of your body while doing sex. He will want to know about the efforts done by you and your partner for becoming pregnant. The physical examination will try to find out any problem in your penis, testicles, epididymis, or vas deferens.

Semen Analysis

This is a kind of routine lab test. It will let you know the exact cause of infertility. Most of the time it is done twice. Collection of semen is done in a sterile cup through masturbation. It is then checked and studied. Your doctor will check your sperm volume, concentration, count and movement. The quality of your sperm speaks about your fertility chances. For example, semen is of good quality if it becomes liquid in 20 minutes about going through the pearly gel. If not, then the problem can be with your sex glands or seminal vesicles.

Even if the analysis indicates no sperm or low sperm, it doesn’t mean that you can’t become a father. There are treatments available for this.

Transrectal Ultrasound

In this procedure, sound waves are employed to take organ pictures. A probe is inserted in your rectum which emits sound waves. By doing this, your doctor can find out the problem in your ejaculatory duct or seminal vesicles.

Testicular Biopsy

In the case of fewer sperm count or no sperm, a biopsy is done. The biopsy can be done in the operation room by giving local anesthesia to the patient. A tiny cut is done in the scrotum. A small piece of tissue is removed from both the testicle and studied using a microscope.

Some science-backed tips for improving male infertility

Do regular exercise

All of us knows that exercise is good for your health. But very few of us are aware of the fact that it also increases the chances of becoming fertile as it increases the level of testosterone. Studies have revealed that men who do regular exercise possess good sperm quality and higher testosterone.

Take less stress

Stress can hamper your sexual desire and can impact your fertility. Extreme anxiety can be treated with medications. Mild stress can be cured with relaxation techniques.

Improve vitamin D in your body

One study has shown that deficiency of vitamin D in men may lead to low testosterone level. You can either get vitamin D naturally through sunlight or get supplements for the same.

Take fenugreek

This is the natural way to increase your testosterone level. It also increases body strength and helps in excessive weight loss.

Treatment of male infertility

Treatment of male infertility can be done based on the underlying problem, or in case of no identified problem, evidence-based treatment can work. Treatments comprise surgery to repair anatomic abnormalities or defect in the reproductive system. Non-surgical treatments include medications that can also improve male infertility like a hormone imbalance or erectile dysfunction.
